Tessa Thompson, Taylor Hill, Irina Shayk and More of the Week’s Best Dressed Stars
These days, it isn’t enough to be elegant; you’ve got to give the fans on Instagram and Twitter something to talk about….
Nothing says 2020 more than a virtual press appearance. Health concerns over live events have caused celebrities to pivot towards home promotion for their latest projects by participating in live-streamed interviews, engaging with fans on social media, and even erecting step and repeat backdrops in their living room. When an appearance lives online, old school ideas about red carpet dressing get thrown out the browser window. It isn’t enough to be elegant, you’ve got to give the fans on Instagram and Twitter something to talk about.
Last week, no one pulled off the concept better than Tessa Thompson, who had multiple appointments on her schedule tied to the release of her Amazon Prime romantic drama, Sylvie’s Love. Each outfit Thompson wore was interesting, but the actor was at her eclectic best in a leather look from Marine Serre’s fall/winter 2020 collection. Daring and pattern heavy, the piece reflected Thompson’s fearless take on fashion while offering an alternate view on how to wear Serre’s now-ubiquitous crescent logo.
If ever a premiere demanded a party, it was this weekend’s debut of The Crown’s fourth season. The cast celebrated virtually, with each actor checking in from their respective home and dressing up for the occasion. For Emma Corrin, who makes her debut as Lady Diana Spencer in the newly released episodes, a plain ol’ red carpet dress wouldn’t do. Instead, the rising star opted for custom Miu Miu. In a one-of-a-kind Miuccia Prada-approved piece, Corrin continued her streak of unorthodox fashion by wearing pale blue tartan head to toe. A statement look that managed to exude fun as Corrin logged onto the event from her laptop, a prime example of meme-worthy style.
Even when celebrities ventured outdoors, the clothes played to online aesthetics. Is there an outfit more Instagram appropriate than Irina Shayk’s velour tracksuit and mini-purse combo? Likewise, when Taylor Hill showed up at the CMA Awards looking like a retro supermodel in double-breasted Versace suiting, or Elsa Hosk took to the streets of Manhattan in Prada combat boots and Courtney Love-esque lace babydoll, it was pure 90s nostalgia destined to be reblogged.
