TikTok’s Fate Hangs in the Balance as Trump Hints at Possible 90-Day Redemption
The countdown is on for TikTok, and President-elect Donald Trump might delay the inevitable. Recently, the Supreme Court decided to uphold a ban on TikTok, the popular video app owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance. This means TikTok could soon vanish from U.S. smartphones unless ByteDance finds an American buyer. With the deadline fast approaching, it’s set for January 19, Trump’s recent comments have thrown a new twist into the situation.
In a phone interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, Trump mentioned that while he hasn’t made a final choice yet, he thinks it’s “most likely” he will give TikTok a 90-day extension. “I think that would definitely be an option we look at,” Trump said. “This extension makes sense because we need to consider this carefully, it’s a big deal.” If Trump goes ahead with this plan, TikTok might get some extra time to make a deal and avoid shutting down completely in the U.S. He said he’d announce his final decision on Monday, leaving millions of American TikTok users on edge just a little longer.
This update follows a video statement from TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, who thanked Trump, though it wasn’t clear why. This adds to the complicated mix of politics and business surrounding TikTok’s future.
