Stephanie Phillips unveils a middle ground in life on latest release “Walking the Tightrope”

Stephanie Phillips

Stephanie Phillips brings a deeply personal emotional tension to “Walking the Tightrope.” “Walking the Tightrope,” an acoustic guitar-laden song, was written in a time of great upheaval, including the death of her brother and her second marriage. The song is about that hard emotional terrain, that unstable ground that exists between two opposing feelings, the difficulty of trying to understand them.

The lyrics express that uncertainty in breathtaking simplicity, “I’ve been Walking the Tightrope, between sorrow and bliss, it’s a strange place to be. The image of a tightrope is a good metaphor for the emotional balance between happiness and sorrow, where they don’t neatly fall into one feeling or the other. Another verse builds the tension: “I’ve been Walking the Tightrope, between darkness and light and I can’t explain, but it don’t feel right.

The acoustic guitar gives a more intimate base that musically suits the emotional subject matter of the song. Stephanie Phillips does not present the experience as one that can be easily resolved. “Walking the Tightrope” lingers with the uncomfortable uncertainty. It is an introspective work that uses emotional contrast, personal experience and the feeling of being between darkness and light, sorrow and elation.

Gus Ormo lets the instruments tell the story on latest release “Claroscuro (AGAPE)”

Claroscuro (AGAPE)

“Claroscuro (AGAPE)” is a voiceless pop song from Gus Ormo, built on an unusually wide instrumental palette. Soft saxophone, piano notes and chord progression provide the musical basis and strings, chilly drums, bass line, shakers and percussion add layers of texture. The set up has the instruments in the front with acoustic and lead guitars.

With no vocal performance at the front of the track, the musical details are the primary means of expression. The saxophone’s soft, giving it a gentle presence and the piano and chord progression give it the structure. The strings add another dimension, and the rhythm of drums, bass, shakers and percussion creates movement underneath the arrangement. The acoustic and lead guitars further define the instrumental sound.

“Claroscuro (AGAPE)” therefore wins through its arrangement rather than its lyrics or vocals. Gus Ormo combines a variety of instrumental colors to make a pop piece that allows each part to add to the general mood. The track builds through layers, rather than a sung narrative, from the softness of the sax and piano to the rhythmic presence of the drums and percussion. This is an instrumental-oriented presentation that gives the composition itself the main role.

The Songs of Butler & Cupples unveils a sensual polish on latest release “Therapy”

The Songs of Butler & Cupples

Songs of Butler & Cupples‘s latest release,  “Therapy” sees vocalist MAVIS return to the vibrant single diving into a sensual and polished vein of alt-pop. The clean, modern production, the airy melodies, the understated percussion, and the buoyant synth work combine to make a sound somewhere between carefully sculpted and keeping the songwriting at the heart of the experience.

“Therapy” is a song with good creative range and it finds a good balance with its elements. The light melodies lift things up, and the sparing percussion keeps the arrangement understated, not crowded. The buoyant synth work only enhances the track, giving the song a polished contemporary character, without taking away from its material.

The Songs of Butler & Cupples still follows that songwriting-first philosophy. The project values the material strength over image, hype or traditional artist infrastructure, and “Therapy” is a reflection of that approach, focusing on the song itself. The project keeps up the continuity with the return of MAVIS and production entering another expressive space. The result is an alt-pop track, defined by melody, restraint and atmosphere, showcasing a project interested in creative range, while keeping songwriting firmly at the heart of its identity.
