Bella Hadid Does Unexpected Layering the Right Way
Piling random things on top of each other and making it look good? It’s an art!…
Layering in the fall and winter can go one of two ways: You can either spend an entire morning trying to coordinate a head-to-toe fit, or you can just blindly pile things on top of each other and hope it keeps you warm (I myself just paired PJ pants with a suede trench coat for a trip to the coffee shop). But leave it to Bella Hadid to prove that one can put together even the most random pieces and it can still look good—the secret’s all in the proportions.
The model was spotted jetting around New York City this weekend wearing the masterfully-layered look in question. Hadid’s Y2K-inspired outfit consists of four pieces that seemingly don’t go together, but somehow, do. Let’s start with the base: she paired a graphic red Jean Paul Gaultier tee with a pair of khaki cargo pants decorated with oversized pockets. Overtop, she then added a green bomber jacket, and a sporty Tommy Hilfiger black vest for even more layers. Overall, her eclectic outfit hits just about every trend box, from designer vintage to sporty and utilitarian—but combined, it made for an unexpected fit that was all about clashing in the right way.
The key to Hadid’s approach? It was the fit and overall proportions; each piece offset the next, making it all blend together. The bomber was slightly cropped, and together with the tight tee, it balanced out the volume the cargo pants provided. Hadid’s slicked back hair also made the whole outfit look intentional. It’s a real art form to make polar-opposite pieces go together, but when done right, it’s just about the coolest way to bundle up this winter. Why match when you can clash?
