Bright Shining Lights creates an instrumental journey in the form of an invisible movie on new Album “SM-02”
Bright Shining Lights expands their cinematic instrumental universe with the nine-track “SM-02,” which takes the mood set by “SM-01” to new heights. The record progresses to richer strings, fuller orchestral accompaniment, and a darker but more beautiful sound. It runs 27 minutes and 49 seconds. Its alternative rock core is augmented with arrangements that feel more like an imagined film score than a standard song collection.
The first track, “Here To There,” begins the journey, and then “Through The Long Glass” adds to the atmosphere with soft strings, echoes that suggest a cathedral-like space, and well-placed notes and chords on the piano. “I Wish You Could See This” changes the focus to large, expansive piano sounds and adds yet another level of scale to the record. With no use of lyrics, the album continues to build its instrumental story across “Lights Ahead,” “Path Less Travelled,” “Now We Get It,” “Cartwheels,” “Splendor,” and “The Moon And The Water.”
The lack of singing is a key part of the artistic vision. Bright Shining Lights doesn’t tell the listener what to think, they leave room for interpretation. Music can bring to mind scenes, feelings, places, and transitions without necessarily having a storyline. This lends the record an open-ended feel while also having a distinct cinematic identity.
The creative philosophy of the SM-02 is also related to the idea of music existing alongside other creative work. There is a nod to Brian Eno’s Music for Airports that suggests an interest in music that can be a backdrop for thought and imagination rather than a focus of attention. That’s evident in the album’s spacious arrangements and instrumental focus.
On “SM-02,” Bright Shining Lights build on the foundations of their previous work and push toward a more expansive cinematic language, creating music that seems less meant to close a story and more to make space for one to start.
