Spike Lee Breaks Silence As ESPN Pulls Plug On Colin Kaepernick Docuseries

Spike Lee

In a rare and tightly measured response, acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee has addressed the sudden halt of his much-anticipated Colin Kaepernick docuseries with ESPN. Speaking to Reuters, Lee revealed that his hands are tied when it comes to details, citing a nondisclosure agreement. “It’s not coming out. That’s all I can say. I can’t. I signed a nondisclosure [agreement]. I can’t talk about it,” Lee admitted, leaving fans and followers to speculate on what might have been. The project, announced in 2022, promised to be a bold and intimate exploration of Kaepernick’s journey, told through his own eyes.

Lee had pledged to bring extensive new interviews and a treasure trove of unseen archival footage to craft a definitive portrait of the quarterback who became one of the most polarizing figures in modern sports. For many, this partnership between one of cinema’s most outspoken voices and an athlete synonymous with protest and principle seemed like a perfect fit. ESPN’s statement underscored a more complicated reality. “ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,” the network shared. While emphasizing appreciation for the work poured into the film, the announcement confirmed what many had feared.

The collapse of the project stings all the more because of the weight of Kaepernick’s story. His career with the San Francisco 49ers ended abruptly after he took a knee during the national anthem, sparking both widespread outrage and passionate support. His protest against police brutality and racial inequality reverberated far beyond the NFL, igniting a cultural conversation still felt today. Kaepernick’s subsequent grievance against the league, and eventual confidential settlement in 2019, only deepened the intrigue surrounding his unfinished legacy.

For Spike Lee, a filmmaker known for challenging narratives and amplifying underrepresented voices, the silence imposed by an NDA seems almost antithetical. And yet, his brief acknowledgment is perhaps the clearest sign that behind closed doors, this project carried more friction than harmony. Though the docuseries has been shelved, the appetite for Kaepernick’s story remains. Whether told by Lee, another filmmaker, or by Kaepernick himself in the future, the activist’s journey is far from forgotten. For now, audiences are left with a reminder that some of the most important stories still struggle to find the screen.

Snoop Dogg Wants To Pay Someone $10,000 A Month To Eat Ice Cream

Snoop Dogg has had a lot of job titles over the years, but “official ice cream taster” wasn’t one of them until now — and he’s hiring someone else to fill it. His company Dr. Bombay just opened applications for the role, and it pays $10,000 a month.

The gig is fully remote and open to anyone on the planet, which Snoop announced himself in a video that’s exactly as laid-back as you’d expect. “I love the paper, but not the paperwork,” he said, explaining that HR firm Deel is handling the logistics while he handles, presumably, the ice cream.

The actual job is less “sit around and eat pints all day” and more part-time cultural scout. Whoever gets it will track flavor and food trends around the world, report back on what people are eating and talking about, and work directly with Dr. Bombay’s in-house flavor lead to help shape what the brand does next. It’s a three-month contractor role, and Snoop’s team says they’re actively looking outside the usual resume pile — creators and non-traditional applicants welcome.

Dr. Bombay itself leans nostalgic, with flavors like Long Beach Fruit Cart, Sticky Caramel Apple Pie, and Peanut Butter Jelly Time already sitting on shelves at Walmart and moving through DoorDash and Instacart. Somewhere out there is one very lucky applicant about to get paid five figures a month to have opinions about ice cream, and honestly, good for them.
