Her music is characterized by her sound- blending pop and soul with a deep inspiring note. She describes the beginning of her songwriting as “sitting in her bedroom writing down what she experienced through the day”. Through improvising chords at the piano, she recognized how easy it was to sort out her own feelings. It let her feel the closest version to her authentic self. Her focus on music began early in her childhood. Her parents (her musical mum and her dad a professional drummer) nurtured and supported their daughter’s creative aims. The Eagles, Toto, the Gadd Gang played at their rural house and accompanying her father on gigs as a teenager has been a significant influence. During those trips, she was amazed by the power of music’s storytelling to feel so close to the performing artist on stage and to feel connected to everybody at the concert without knowing them. Improvising in her bedroom inspired her to write songs and through the magic of live concerts, it created the wish to be on stage with her own messages and be the inspiration for other people who may recognize their own stories in her´s. Daydreaming and ´falling in love too quickly´ as she describes herself, she hopes for the listeners to find inspirational depth in life through her music.

Hi Nathalie, thanks for taking out time to respond to us. Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Nathalie Brucker – Well, telling about my way to songwriting and singing my own songs, I should start to explain how I discovered my passion for music in general. My focus on music began early in my childhood. There are always these two cases of starting with music, the dearest wish of a child to have a piano or an instrument in general or the house which is already full of instruments, everything is there ready to start. In my case, the piano was already standing in our living room. I have grown up in a very musical family, my mum was passionate about music and my dad, a professional drummer – was always supporting my creative aims. The Eagles, Toto, the Gadd Gang played since always at our home and accompanying my father, on gigs as a teenager, I think, have been significant influences. During the performances of my father, I was so impressed by the power of music’s storytelling to feel so close to the performing artist on stage and to feel connected to everybody at the concert without even knowing them. Since this time I was sure that I want to do music, so I started playing the drums and later focusing on singing.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started this career? And who are some of the most interesting people you have interacted with? What was that like? Do you have any stories?

Nathalie Brucker – The most interesting, inspiring experience for me was to work with one English producer and his production partner from London on my first own song ever besides the thousand songs you start to write and never finish..) It was also my debut single called “Ocean Of Stars” and the first I’ve ever published on all streaming platforms. After I’ve been writing the lyrics, chords, and structure they have been the ones who in the end finishing touch on the song with incredible production. This kind of spheric sound they put on, in the end, was exactly what I wanted for it. I was imagining my song in a certain style and mood and even if it’s not possible to express this mood in words, they seemed to know what I felt writing the song. They worked amongst others in Abbey Road studios and also with well-known stars like Calum Scott before.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that? And what are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?

Nathalie Brucker – Right now I am working on a song with an Ecuadorian singer and guitarist on a song which has a mix of English and Spanish lyrics. It was never planned to write in two languages but writing on it, expressing different feelings became a “bilingual” song changing the language between the verses and chorus. Writing in the Spanish language is a way to show my Spanish roots and affinity towards Latin culture, mentality, and music. This said song with a happy, Latin summer mood is planned to come out in summer 2022.

I think that my performance together with the German DJ ALLE FARBEN in a hotel club in Egypt was, included all the way of preparing it, the atmosphere and excitement during the performance, and the feedback of the supporting audience while singing the favorite gig I’ve ever had. He is passionate about what he’s doing and cooperating with so many different successful singers, expressing so many various styles in his songs, which is just admirable.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”? You have been blessed with success in a career path that can be challenging. Do you have any words of advice for others who may want to embark on this career path, but seem daunted by the prospect of failure?

Nathalie Brucker – I think the key to not burning out is not to forget the reason why you’re doing it. Music should have a message. You should have a message you want to transmit. There should be a willingness to tell the audience about it. The desire to put out what you want to say, if this is a message to the whole world or just to one person will give you always the necessary drive.

Can you share with our readers any self-care routines, practices, or treatments that you do to help your body, mind, or heart to thrive? Kindly share a story or an example for each.

Nathalie Brucker – So, in some way, a certain routine, practice, and treatment of soul and body are all related to each other. I feel alive, more productive, and full of energy when I am in nature, for example, to feel one with myself allows me not only to put the best lyrics on the paper but also to let these thoughts into my consciousness first. That’s why I chose a run in the morning as the first thing I do like about my routine. After that, sitting with a nice breakfast coffee on my piano gives me the base to start to write music.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each.

  1. First thing, I shouldn’t orientate on what people “could” like on one of my potential songs. To let it flow, to express what you’re feeling in this certain moment of writing will always have the most authentic effect.
  2. Secondly, and I learned later that it’s okay not to be productive at all in a day, or maybe two. It’s fine.
  3. You shouldn’t overthink every word in your written lyrics. “Is there a better expression for it?” No- in this overthinking way the flair and style get lost.
  4. “Is there something you wanna hide from yourself?” -Ask yourself. That will be the best topic to write a song about.
  5. Fun fact about performing: I wished someone would have told me in the beginning, that even if I don’t remember the lyrics two seconds before I go on stage, they WILL appear in the right moment, hearing the song. I was panicking a lot one day when I was singing my cover version “Nothing Else Matters” in a duo acoustic version with a guitarist in a too-long red, sparkly dress during a production show. But the lyrics showed up at a certain moment.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

Nathalie Brucker – There are so many nice and important quotes and I love reading through all of them but one which was always my favorite is the bible quote of Hebrews 11:1: <Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.>

You SHOULD hope, in general, you should have a lot of hope for so many things in life, maybe wishes or big dreams, but even more important you should be sure that they will happen or that they are already happening even if you can not see them with your bare eye.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

Nathalie Brucker – Of course, when we are talking about business, it’s all about contacts but the person who helped me in an important situation (I think, like in all important situations in my life) was my mum. It was a moment when I was afraid that I have to start crying in front of the audience the first time I was about to perform “Ocean Of Stars” in public because starting to cry in the middle of the song happened a few times before, singing, playing and rehearsing it at home, She told me that even if it would happen, there’s nothing to feel uncomfortable or ashamed about, because like that, she said, the people will know that you mean what you’re writing, that there are true feelings behind. I think it’s transferable to so many situations in life.

We are very blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch, and why? He or she might see this. 🙂

Nathalie Brucker – I definitely, would like to have a private breakfast with John Mayer or BANKS. Both of them are incredibly talented songwriters. I love Mayer’s versatile types of songs, I am in love with his style of putting lyrics and music together, especially in his blues songs. And BANKS is just a queen for me. I heard some podcasts about her way of creating songs in the studio. Her deep style of writing and later on the often mystical way of production is unique.
