Snoop Dogg, who took ownership of Death Row Records in 2022, is on a mission to revive the iconic label. Originally home to legends like Dr. Dre, 2Pac, and Snoop himself, Death Row had been dormant for nearly two decades following legal troubles that culminated in bankruptcy in 2006 under former boss Suge Knight. Now, under Snoop’s leadership, the label is making a comeback in the ever-evolving hip-hop and R&B scene.

Snoop has signed several new artists, including Rhythm + Flow winner D Smoke, singer October London, and the legendary Tha Dogg Pound, who released their first album on the label in nearly thirty years. Adding to this dynamic roster, Snoop recently introduced R&B and gospel singer Charlie Bereal as the latest signee. The announcement, made on Instagram, has sparked a wave of excitement among fans.

Charlie Bereal, known for his soulful sound reminiscent of 1970s R&B, has garnered positive reactions from fans. “We need this kind of music again,” one user commented, while another noted, “Sounds a lot like The Stylistics.” However, some fans expressed nostalgia for Death Row’s original hip-hop roots, questioning the label’s shift towards R&B. “What happened to the real sound of Death Row?” asked one user.

Bereal, previously a member of the gospel group The Soul Seekers, released his debut solo album Testimony in 2017, followed by 11-11-11 in 2019. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he is primarily known for his guitar skills and is also a Grammy-nominated artist for his work on BJ the Chicago Kid’s track “Bring It On Home To Me.” His debut single with Death Row, “Never Gonna Take Away My Love,” is set to release on Friday, marking a new chapter in his career.

With Snoop Dogg at the helm, Death Row Records is poised to blend its legendary past with a fresh sound, and Charlie Bereal’s unique style might just be the key to bridging the gap.

iLLLACAT drops “Like Dat,” a Hip-Hop cut with punchy production, percussion, and synths that give the record movement.
