On Wednesday, January 20, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will officially be sworn in in a scaled-down ceremony presided over by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.
It’s safe to say that this year’s inauguration festivities won’t look like those of years past, particularly given the insurrection that took place at the Capitol last week, but there’s still plenty on the agenda. Below, find all the details of what January 20 will look like in D.C.
The FBI and the Secret Service have ramped up security plans.
In an attempt to curb the potential danger of protests from Trump supporters, D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser has extended the capital’s public emergency through January 21.
Most of the day’s events will be virtual.
While Biden’s actual swearing in will take place on the Capitol’s West Front sometime before noon, there won’t be the traditional parade along Pennsylvania Avenue. Instead, military representatives will give Biden an escort, accompanied by a virtual parade for the purposes of “paying homage to America’s heroes on the front lines of the pandemic,” according to a statement by the inaugural committee.
Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez will perform.
Lady Gaga will sing the national anthem, while Lopez will perform an as-yet-undisclosed musical number during the swearing-in ceremony.
A virtual musical event will take the place of the inaugural ball.
Tom Hanks, a.k.a. America’s dad, will host a prime-time television event scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET that will include appearances from Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Ant Clemons, Jon Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, John Legend, and Bruce Springsteen.
President Donald Trump will not be in attendance.
Vice President Mike Pence, however, is planning to attend. Multiple former presidents, including Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, are scheduled to be there as well.
