In the days and weeks leading up to this year’s U.S. election, as the ever-narrowing race found itself squarely at the center of the world’s attention, the range of possible outcomes for a country divided by a pandemic, a civil rights movement, and structural inequality was near overwhelming. As the past 72 hours have unfolded under the global spotlight, however, America has risen to the challenge with record voter turnout ahead of a new chapter in its history.
Still, as any photographer will tell you, any attempt to capture the full picture is futile. Instead, the most telling stories have been those taking place on an atomic level—from cookie stores to individual poll workers to family farms—and how they represent the fractures that run across the entire country, and the possibilities the election holds to reconcile them.
From all over the world, here Magnum photographers share a snapshot of this unique moment in time. Taken over three days from Monday morning to Wednesday night, across numerous U.S. states and countries as far-flung as Russia, Iran, and Mexico, the images reflect the various ways in which communities responded to the events as they unfolded. From the final day of canvassing to the endless Election Night results parties on Zoom, see how 30 photographers interpreted this tumultuous week—and where they hope the U.S. is heading next.
