Exclusive Interview with Megmafia, an independent South-African female rapper from Johannesburg
Today, we are going to introduce one of the finest and hottest south African female rappers on the radar you need to know in 2022. Megan King, better known as Megmafia is an independent South African rapper and singer from Johannesburg, South Africa. She has a music background joining choirs and entering music competitions at the age of 7.
We had the opportunity to interview Megmafia to talk about her music career, inspiration, and the latest in her life so far in the music industry.
Can you tell our readers about what really inspired you to write music?
Megmafia – Inspiring the masses has always been one of my greatest purposes in this realm and being able to vocalize my beliefs through the means of music was a blessing in every possible way. I’ve always wanted to bring forth a narrative that will impact the minds of tomorrow and lead them towards greener pastures with humble hearts. Aside from that, music has always been a part of who I am. It makes me happy and when I’m able to impact people with a domino effect of genuine happiness, I believe my duty here is fulfilled through something I love.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
Megmafia – I don’t like to think of music as a profession but rather as my way of life. It’s been embedded in me since birth although I must have been around the age of 15 when I first realised people enjoyed my sound and what my music represented.
Tell us what is so unique about you and your music?
Megmafia – What’s unique about my music is that it doesn’t cater to one specific genre. I’m extremely versatile as both a person and as an artist. R&B has and always will be my first love and then of course what I’m most renowned for, which is Hip Hop. Being able to infuse my vocal range with rap is the coolest thing I think I’m capable of. I’ve also explored avenues like Afro-pop which is something I’m still trying to perfect.
Can you tell us about your latest releases and what inspired you to create them?
Megmafia – My latest singles were both R&B. “Distance” & “Good Girl, Bad Habits” was simply made out of genuine emotion and not for the purposes of creating a “banger” I just wanted to create something relatable. Each single represented a major part of my recent history that I’m blessed to have experienced. It helped me understand myself in so many ways but as of lately releasing projects hasn’t been my main priority but rather taking my 20s to understand the business logistics of the industry before taking major strides musically.
Can you give us a brief insight into your upcoming projects?
Megmafia – An E.P consisting of 4 gems seems to be on the horizon if my will permits it to be. It’ll be my first full body of work in 5 years. I’m excited and anxious all in one breath. Music has changed so drastically and the pressure of “keeping up with the wave” tends to change artists and their true sounds an awful lot. I’m simply just trying to preserve who I am and deliver my old soul to this new age.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Megmafia – I wish I was told and encouraged to be self-reliant and teach myself how to do all the things that every artist requires. Like producing my own material. That’s the key to unlocking your own doors without having any glitches or setbacks. Starting young would’ve leveraged me greatly.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) that you are passionate about?
Megmafia – I’m really passionate about watching documentaries that withhold facts about the world, humanity, and cryptocurrencies – other than that you can catch me watching soccer, in the gym, or in bed. I love sleeping, super passionate about that!
Any last piece of advice for those artists who just started making music?
Megmafia – The same advice I wish I was given will be the same advice I’ll provide. Artists who are reading this, learn how to produce their own music. Sacrifice those hours of playtime and focus on your legacy. Spend less time in the club and more time educating yourself about this business because it has a dark side to it and doesn’t forget to surround yourself with a team that has your best intentions at heart. Keep your third eye open, always.
How can our readers follow you online?
Megmafia – You can follow me @megmafia on all platforms.

Kalpee Honors Heritage and Heart on His Emotion-Rich New EP Dougla Boi
Kalpee is back with Dougla Boi, a beautiful new EP that is both personal and powerful. It gives listeners a close look at the layers of identity, heritage, and emotion that make him who he is. The Trinidad and Tobago artist is confident in his own space, which is rooted in New Calypso and polished with hints of dancehall, R&B, and afrobeats. In this space, genre bends, but emotion leads.
Named after the Trinidadian word for someone of mixed African and Indian heritage, Dougla Boi is honest, proud, and warm about the complexities of culture. Kalpee opens a window into the dualities that define him across six tracks, turning personal truth into universal resonance. The EP is just under 19 minutes long, but every second is carefully planned to take listeners on a journey through courage, joy, healing, and the quiet strength that comes from accepting all parts of yourself.
The first single, “Under,” stands out right away for its calming yet emotionally charged experience. Kalpee’s voice flows over a beat that sounds both new and old, fitting the EP’s theme of bringing cultures together. It’s one of the best examples of how he can mix soft and hard sounds, which is what makes his New Calypso sound so unique.
“Everybody,” which features Full Blown, is another excellent song that has already done very well. It has a happy vibe and an infectious bounce, making it one of the EP’s most replayable songs. “Everybody” captures the spirit of community and shared experience, which is what Kalpee means when he says that identity is not a box but a rhythm.
