Snoop Dogg Slammed with Lawsuit Over Alleged Copyright Infringement on BODR Tracks
Snoop Dogg has landed in hot water with a fresh legal battle brewing. Earlier this week, producer and drummer Trevor Lawrence Jr. filed a copyright lawsuit against the rapper in LA federal court, accusing him of using two backing tracks without proper payment. Lawrence Jr. claims he allowed Snoop to “experiment with the tracks in-studio,” making it clear that payment would be required if the tracks were commercially released.
The tracks in question, “Pop Pop” and “Get This Dick,” are featured on Snoop’s 2022 album BODR. According to Lawrence Jr.’s attorneys, there was no formal licensing agreement, and the producer has yet to see any financial compensation for his contributions.
“To date, defendants have refused to properly license the Lawrence tracks or compensate Lawrence for their use in the Broadus tracks,” the lawsuit states. Lawrence Jr. often creates tracks to shop around to artists, assuming a proper license will be negotiated. His attorneys claim that he and Snoop agreed on a $10K flat fee plus a 50% interest in the musical composition. However, the lawsuit argues that the songs have generated “tens of millions of dollars,” especially with their release as NFTs.
“At no point in time did defendants… Communicate to Lawrence any intention to exploit the Lawrence tracks in connection with a bundled offering such as [the NFT sale], nor did Lawrence authorize any such exploitation of his work,” the lawsuit emphasizes.
